Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women
After much lobbying from several womens organizations, an act was passed in the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly on June 6, 1980, to create a Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women (PACSW). On November 21, 1980 it was formally established with Ann Bell of Corner Brook as President, Barbara Doran as Vice-President, and nine other women as Council Members representing other areas of the province. Structured as an independent organization at arms-length from the government, the Advisory Council took on the mandate to advise, advocate, and educate the government on matters affecting the women of Newfoundland and Labrador. It still continues that work today.
